"8 MONACHE NIGRE" - for the Todi Art Festival 2004 from July 16 2004 to July 26 2004
Todi, church SS. Filippo & Giacomo

A new generation of artists settled at Pastificio Cerere: Nicolaj Pennestri, Pietro Ruffo and Maurizio Savini.
The location of a church used as an exhibition site for contemporary art. Perhaps for the fact that buildings of cult have always been places where were concentrated art works often stratified during centuries and to the detriment of other works previously made. The artistic research found in these places many important moments that became a fundamental part of art’s history in continuous accumulation. The space of the church has also been the heart of the research of a total environment occupation, creating a sense of horror vacui. There are many interesting elements that characterize the site of a church as the place of art’s "environmental" research. Moreover places of cult have been the first and most important exchanges between art and public. For many of these reasons places of cult are comparable to the contemporary exhibition sites. The space of the church is also interesting for the historical and human memory that can be breathed in it.
The three artists who participate to the exhibition the "eight negro nuns" seem to try to perform not only the space of the church as an exhibition site of particular interest, but also to recover the human memory that has, for many centuries, characterized this site. Through this exhibition there is the attempt, with the participation of Nicolaj Pennestri, Pietro Ruffo, Maurizio Savini, to recover and interpret a story carried out in the adjacent convent, church of SS Filippo and Giacomo. The reserved life of the cloister nuns becomes the central story of the exhibition and the of the artist’s works.
The untitled work of Maurizio Savini shows a picture: a person in a monastic dress while peeling a potato with a precious sign language that remembers for her economy of image the classic painting.
Pietro Ruffo with the installation dementia 8 tries to capture the moment of an old nun in her last surf of life looking towards the absolute uncertain past life.
Nicolaj Pennestri in “a dress changes your life” video n' 1 works on the concept of identity and his transformation through various situations, in particular as it radically changes a person appearance in a certain dress.
three works try to interpret the environment of the church, in its articulation in the space, and concentrating on the context of the convent, they pay homage to the memory of the place.
