The job of the artist, who has a predilection for the human figure, takes root in the ancient classic art, on the Greco-Roman, Etruscan and Egyptian heritage. It finds, moreover, references also in the European sculpture of XX century, like in Brancusi, Wilhelm Lembruck, Red Medardo and in the Italian sculptural tradition of the Thirties .

"Oliviero’s figures, bronzes and plasters," as Peter Weiermair writes, "they move in a field of iconography that nobody in the recent history of art has crossed with such gravity significance. Someone could think that this field hasn’t nothing to offer and this fact produces the dejà vu and the cynicism exercises. Oliviero Rainaldi proves the contrary with his works that express a great naturalness and a Franciscan simpilcity… I think Rainaldi is a surprising successful outsider, whose work joins opposite points of view".

Rainaldi sculptures represent his artistic and personal evolution, bringing to light, through the essentiality of the shapes, emotions, loneliness and the drive vibrations of sexuality and the search of spirituality. In his first works the shapes had ambiguous connotations, without a clear sexual definition of the figures, or they represented the contrasted masculine universe, then, slowly woman’s figure takes her place beside man. The purity of the androgynous ideal becomes the instrument to exceed the sexuality power in order to celebrate the moral values, in particular the family values. His figures never fall into the traditional figuration because they are realized with extreme essentiality. The materials are plaster, bronze and white marble of Carrara.

The drawings are the essential part of Rainaldi work. His works are always completed, also when they are preliminary studies, they present essential lines, bold and fast strokes without any uncertainty. There will be a large and meaningful body of pencil, charcoal, china, moderates, watercolour, oil drawings, all on paper. They belong to years 1988 - 2003 revealing the fundamental structure the artist’s thought. A substantial part of it is constituted by the series of the heads.

For the occasion a book will be published with an accurate selection of his works from 1983 to 2003. Published by the publishing house of Rome Il Cigno, it contains an essay of Peter Weiermair and some tests of Alice Rubbini.

Oliviero Rainaldi begins to expose in 1975. He is invited in many galleries and Italian and foreign museums. His works are shown in several museums and institutions, like Mezzanine Gallery of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Municipal Palace of Stockholm, the Collection of Works of Art of the United Nations Office of Geneva and the Galleria d’Arte Comunale in Rome.

He lives and works in Rome.
